W.W.S.A. ORGANISATION PAPIER MACHE GROUP Splendid work is being carried out by the papier mache group of the Marton W.W.S.A. under the organisation of Mrs. F. J. Christensen. Appreciation of their work is shown in the fact that orders for 1550 articles for hospitals overseas have been received by the Marton group. In order to cope with this demand night classes are to be started, and of course more willing workers are required to assist in completing this order. Intending workers arc invited to communicate with Mrs. Christensen for details. The telephone number is 2225. MARTON LADIES’ GOLF CLUB An L.G.U. medal round will be played on lhe Marton golf links to-mor-row (Saturday). Draw at clob rooms at 1.15 p.m. Last week's bogey winner was Mrs. J. B. S. Dudding, 5 down. NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER The following services will be held in St. Stephen’s Church to-day:—lo a.m., Holy Communion; 3 p.m., Intercessions, and 8 pm.. Service of Prayer and Dedication. Preacher at 8 p.m.. Rev. James R.obertson. A service of Intercession will bo held in the Lutheran Church to-night (Friday), at 7.30 p.m. Friends and neighbours are cordially invited. AN ENGAGEMENT PARTY On Wednesday evening a very enjoyable time was spent by relatives and friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. I. Montgomery, Russell Street. Marton. During the evening the engagement was announced of their eldest daughter Eileen, to Mr. R. T. Blackler, of Marton. Dancing, games and songs were indulged in. The music was supplied by Mr. A. R. Beckman, extras being played by Mr. Blackler. The evening terminated with the singing of "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows.” VITAL STATISTICS The vital statistics for Marton for the month of August show an increase of seven births against the corresponding month last. year. The figures for August. 1942 being in parentheses, are: Deaths 5 (2); marriages, 1 (3); births, 15 (8). VISIT TO MARTON OF MISS COX-JOHNSTON A most enjoyable day was spent at "Thrybeigh,” the home of Miss Ful-lerton-Smith. by the combined W.D.F.U. and Women's Institute members. when Miss Cox-Johnston was the speaker. The morning was devoted to the pruning of shrubs, etc., grafting of fruit trees and the all important compost heap. After a picnic lunch Miss Cox-Johnston gave a most interesting and instructive lecture on the preserving and drying of fruits and vegetables. a subject very dear to the hearts of all women. At the conclusion a very hearty vote of thanks was passed to Miss Cox-Johnston for her very able and interesting addresses and also to Miss FullertonSmith for the use of her home and garden. It is to be hoped another such day will b aranged at some future date. RANGITIKEI ELECTORATE On account of an early afternoon meeting at Kakatahi being unsuitable for the settlers in that district, the meeting arranged for Monday, September 6, at 2 p.m., has been cancelled. RAINFALL AT HIHITAHI The rainfall at Hautapu, Hihitahi, for the month of August, has been kindly supplied by Mr. L. E. From January 1. 1943. to August 31. 1943. 41.03 inches. Rain fell on 19 days during August, the maximum fal being 1.01 inches on August 6. MARTON FIRE BRIGADE DANCE The Marton Fire Brigade will hold another of their popular dances in the Empire Hall to-morrow (Saturday) evening. First-clas music, old-time, modern and novelty dances will be the order of the evening. CIVIC THEATRE, MARTON TO-NIGHT ONLY "SHE’S MY LOVELY” Gloria Jean. Universal’s youthful •singing star, has her first movie boy friend in "She's My Lovely,” the breezy romantic drama mocing to the Civic Theatre to-night only. The boy friend is talented Donald O’Connor and he is co-starred with Gloria in the entertaining new film. In the current film, "They Raid by Night,” Lyle Talbot stars as the head of a hazardous Commando expedition sent from England to release an imprisoned Norse commander, and finds some charming but dangerous feminine opposition in June Duprez, who is cast in the role of a Norwegian girl who turns traitor to her country and works with the Nazi conquerors. RANGITIKEI ELECTORATE MR. E. B. GORDON’S CAMPAIGN Mr. E. B. Gordon, National candidate for Rangitikei, has had most successful meetings at Turakina, Putorino and Managweka, there being good attendances and keen interest evinced. A number of questions were asked and satisfactorily answered. Hearty votes of thanks to the candidate at each meeting were carried by acclamation.
