MARCHING DISPLAY
WAIOURU STAFF CAMP BAND. A spectacular marching display, in which several intricate movements were featured, was given on Cook’s Gardens at the patriotic “trotting” meeting on Saturday afternoon by the Waiouru Staff Camp Band, under Captain F. Kirby, with WarrantOfficer J. Christ as Drum-Major. The display, in the opinion of competent judges, was the best given by a brass band in the city for a long period. Last night the band assisted at a patriotic concert given in the Opera House, where its playing was enthusiastically received. In introducing the band Lieutenant W. J. HamptonReynolds, educational, welfare and sports officer, headquarters staff, Waiour Camp, said the band was recognised as one of the finest musical and marching combinations in the New Zealand Army. The conductor, Captain Kirkby, had spent more than half his life, both at sea and ashc e, moulding bands and orchestras which have held high place in the musical world. Lieutenant Hampton-Reynolds said Captain Kirkby was also an accomplished musician and composer. The band under its conductor has toured various centres in aid of patriotic funds.
