Prompt Day. “Prompt day” for the first wool appraisal of the Wanganui season, which was held recently, will be held on September 1. Road Cycling Race. The winner secured fastest time, doing the distance in 28mins. 40secs.
Rugby Matches. Two Rugby matches were played on Spriggens Park on Saturday afternoon. The main match, between Kaier au and Pirates, was won by Pirates by 13 points to 3. In a fourth grade match, played as a curtainraiser. Pirates defeated Kaierau by 12 points to 6. Broadcast Address.
Arrangements have been made for the address to be delivered by the Hon. R. Semple, in the Wanganui East Town Hall on the night of Saturday, September 18, to be broadcast. By a coincidence this happens to be a night on which Mr. Semple is scheduled to broadcast over the national system, and as he is speaking in Wanganui his address will be relayed to Wellington. Mr. -Semple will speak in support of Lieutenant. J. B. Cotterill, M.P., official Labour candidate for the Wanganui electorate.
Plaque on H.M.S. Hawera. A plaque presented by Ute citizens of Hawera was installed" on the borebridge of H.M.S. Hawera, of the Royal New Zealand Navy, at a recent ceremony, stated that commanding officer. Lieutenant A. K. Griffiths, R.N.Z.N.V.R., in a letter received by the town clerk, Mr. J. M. Neilsen. On the arrival of the plaque, which bears a replica of the scroll work and inscription that appears on the pendant of the Hawera Mayoral chain, the order was given to “clear lower deck” and muster all hands The accompanying letter from the Mayor and councillors and the inscription were read to the ship's company, and after the plaque had been handed round for close inspection it was screwed into a conspicuous position above the ship’s bell. Day of Prayer.
In response to the King’s expressed wish that Friday, September 3, the fourth anniversary of Britain’s entry into the war, should be observed as a day of prayer and dedication, arrangements have been made for a united service to be held in the Opera House from 11 a.m. till noon. The service will be conducted by the president of the Wanganui Ministers’ Association, Rev. E. B. Chambers, assisted by other clergy. An address will be given by the Rev. W. N. Flett. An appeal has been made to the management of several factories and workshops for facilities which will enable ministers to conduct on these premises short devotional services for employees whose work prevents them from attending at the Opera House. The Mayor. Hon. W. J. Rogers, will also issue a request that shops and offices in the city be closed for an hour on Friday and staffs given an opportunity of attending the united service.
