VIRGINIA LAKE CONCERT
HIGHLAND PIPE BAND'S FINE WAR RECORD During the week-end the Wanganui Highland Pipe Band had two parades, playing at the Wanganui East Town Hall on Saturday afternoon and at the Virginia Lake reserve yesterday afternoon. Ideal spring weather yesterday and the attraction of tin band playing brought hundreds of visitors to Virginia Lake, and the City Corporation bus was kept busy carrying people to and from the reserve and the Centennial Winter Gardens. Playing with the band yesterday were Piper E .S. Cameron, who recently returned on furlough from the Middle East, and Drum-Corporal G. J. Knox, who is on furlough from a South Pacific base. Two other former members of the band, Corporal R. Davidson, who several years ago was the band’s drum-major, and Piper R. Ross, have recently returned from active service abroad,* and War-rant-Officer J. Malcolm returned some months ago. These members will be entertained by the band at a social evening to-night. The band has a fine record for the present war, as in addition to the members mentioned the following are on active service:—Pipers J. Meikle, R. Brownlie, L. Stewart. A. Sowman, N. Grant. A. Futcher, L. Budge, T. S. Mulcahy. F. Managh, A. McNicol, P. Fisher J. Allen, S. Loveridge. C. Loveridge, A. Bryson, and A. Hackshaw, and Drummers. W R. Rush. R. Wallace and S. F. Swan. Of these. C. Loveridge, a prisoner of war. is the only casualty among band members. Several other members have served in New Zealand but have been discharged on appeal for essential industries. ________
