HUGE CROPS HARVESTED

AUSTRALIAN ARMY GARDENS Recd. 6.30 p.m. Sydney, Aug. 28. Australian Army gardensat a northern operational station produced about 55,0001 b. ot produce in July—five times the quantity produced in the previous month. Crops harvested in July, valued at £14,000, included 3852201 b. of tomatoes, 132,0001:). ot caboage, 10,0001 b. of lettuce and big quantities ot bananas, pawpaws ana other fruit. The troops have full farming equipment, including tractors and rotary hoes and the army has built its own packing sheds. Now the army will start its own bee farms. To supervise the nutrition of Australian troops, an A.I.F. officer ot the Army Medical Corps, Major N. M. Gutteridge, has been appointed medical liaison officer to co-operate with the directorate of army catering. Major Gutteridge was for six years chairman of the Queensland Nutrition Council and before the war -was responsible for nutrition education and research in that State. He will keep the army medical directorate informed on all nutritional matters relating to the feeding of troops in battle areas.
