DEATH IN WANGANUI

DR. HOWARD H. CHRISTIE A well-known medical practitioner in Wanganui, Dr. Howard Henry Christie, died early yesterday after a short illness. He was born in Patea and was a son of the late Mr. H. F. Christie, a former bank manager in Patea, who resided for many years at “Awatiro,” St. John’s Hill. Dr. Christie attended the Wanganui Collegiate School from 1895 till 1900, and was president of the Old Boys’ Association from 1926 till 1928. He took his M. 8., Ch.B., and M.D. degrees at Glasgow University and his F. at Edinburgh. During the war of 1914-18 he served in the New Zealand Medical Corps in Egypt with the rank of captain. Surviving Dr. Christie are his wife and two children. A son. Mr. N. H. G. Christie, is serving with the 2nd. N.Z.E.F. in the Middle East, and a daughter, Mrs. Peter Markham, lives in Christchurch. There is one grandchild.

Dr. Christie, who practised in Wanganui up to the time of his death, was a keen lover of birds and kept a large aviary, specialising in the breeding and exhibiting of budgerigars, for which he won many championships. For many years Dr. Christie was a member of the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Club and took a prominent part in the management of its affairs. He represented the club on the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association for several years and was also a vicepresident of the association. He donated a trophy, the Christie Cup, for competition among the five minor associations in the southern part of the North Island.

Dr. Christie was recognised as being better at doubles than singles play fyid for five years in succession he won the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association’s men’s doubles.

HOSPITAL BOARD TRIBUTE

A tribute to the late Dr. Howard Christie was paid by the chairman, Mr. W. E. Broderick (Maxwell) at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui Hospital Board yesterday. “Dr. Christie was associated with this hospital in an honorary capacity and as a visiting member of the staff for many years,” said Mr. Broderick. “I am sure he has given good service. We all regret his passing.” A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried, board members standing in silence as a mark of respect to Dr. Christie’s memory.
