Mr. H. F. O’Leary, K.C., has been elected president, Mr. A. H. Johnstone, K.C., vice-president, and Mr. A. T. Young honorary treasurer of the New Zealand Law Society. Mr. Thomas Auton, president of the Incorporated Institute of Accountants of New Zealand, left Wanganui yesterday for Wellington to preside over the council meetings of the institute. Flight-Sergeant Dudley John Opie, who has been killed on active service, was born in Wanganui 20 years ago. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Opie, Mckauiti. He left New Zealand for Canada in October, 1941, and graduated at a wireless school, being afterward transferred to an observers’ school in that country. Flight-Ser-geant Opie was a keen sportsman. He showed promise of developing into a line runner and was a member of the Aria Junior Football Club. Three brothers are serving with the forces. With the death of the Rev. Robert Raine, New Zealand Methodism has lost one of its most devoted ministers. He died at his residence, 54 Apuka Street, Brooklyn, Wellington, on Wednesday morning at the age of 77 years. A native of Durham. Mr. Raine was born at Weardale, England, in 1866. Coming to New Zealand in his 22nd year, he felt the call to preach, and in 1892 became a probationer in the Primitive Methodist Church, commencing his work in the Foxton circuit. He was a strongly evangelistic oreacher, and an outstanding pastor. In 1909 the Primitive Methodist Church appointed him president of the conference. After a successful ministry of forty years in various parts of New Zealand, he retired from active work in 1932, but since that time till 18 months ago he had been constantly preaching wherever needed. He retired from the Brooklyn Methodist Church, and since then had been residing in that district. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
