THE BRITISH RATES CHILD AND KIT ALLOWANCES London. More pay for junior officers In the navy and army and better allowances for officers in All Services were announced in Parliament by Sir John Anderson, Lord President of the Council. The changes take effect immediately and will cost 15,500,000 a year.

Army lieutenant’s pay increased from 13s to 14s 6d a day after three years' commissioned service, and army captain’s from 16-, 6d to 17s 6d a day after three years. To preserve parity of treatment between flying personnel in the Fleet Air Arm and the R.A.F., Sir John said, flying pay of acting sub-lieuten-ants will be reduced from 6s to 4s a day and that of midshipmen from 4s 6d to 4s. Officers’ outfit allowances (now £35 tor the army and £45 for the navy and R.A.F.) will be increased by £lO. and the extra allowance for tropical kit will be Increased from £5 to £lO. An increase in outfit allowances in the Women's services was also announced. Sir John also announced that the minimum unit for war service grants to serving men's families is to be raised from 16s to 18s, each child under the school-leaving age being counted as a half.
