SHORTLIVED LIBERTY

MAORI ESCAPEES FROM GAOE AT AUCKLAND (P.A.) Auckland. March 18. Only a few hours’ liberty was gained by two Maori prisoners who escaped from Auckland gaol this morning. They were recaptured at Otahuhu this evening, dressed in civilian clothes. They offered nc resistance. They are Hugh Simons, aged 31, and Sam Rcpia, aged 22. Simons is an habitual criminal and both have bad records. Each has previously escaped from custody. Both convicts were working on top of the prison quarry with a drilling machine and they had to elude a sentry in order to get away. They were seen near the boundary of the Auckland Grammar School grounds at 10.30 a.m, and an alarm was raised shortly afterwards. Later prison officials found a discarded jacket and undershirt in the school grounds.
