RIVER EROSION

CLAIM OF SOLUTION FOR CONTROL (P.A.) Christchurch. March 13. A claim that he can, by an insignificant expenditure, control at will the permanent direction of any shingle stream is made by Mr. M. S. O’Malley, of Cronadun, near Reefton. and he has offered, for a consideration of 150,000, to place his discoveries at the disposal of the Government to assist in overcoming river erosion.

Back in April, 1938, Mr. O’Malley wrote to the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, stating that he had originated a simple method of controlling river erosion in shingle streams. He said that the scheme, if put into operation, would be of great value and suggested that the Minister should come and see what he had done with a stream in his locality. The Minister replied suggesting that the district Public Works engineer should inspect the stream, but Mr. O'Malley declined, stating that that would give the whole secret away and his idea might be "poached.’’ To this the Minister replied that Mr. O’Malley would first have to convince departmental officers that the scheme was practicable. Correspondence draged on the next few years and then, in 1941, came a change of Ministers, the late Hon. H. T. Armstrong taking over Public Works. He, too. was non-committal and the idea was referred to the Soil Conservation and River Control Council. Again nothing happened and there the matter rests to-day.
