ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

SOCIETY’S ANNUAL MEETING The work of the conferences and women’s auxiliaries of the Wanganui St. Vincent de Paul Society for the past year was reviewed at the annual meeting held yesterday afternoon in St. Joseph’s Schoolroom. Mr. W. J. Feeney presided over an attendance of about 50. Opportunity was taken to welcome the new parish priest, the Rev. Father M. Burke, to the annual meeting. The work of the society is purely voluntary and makes no distinction regarding creed in its attentions to the noor and distressed. The wide range of activity carried out by the society disclosed in the various reports showed that it still requires the assistance that the charitably minded can give.

Numerous visits were paid to the poor and distressed and relief given, public institutions visited, patriotic efforts assisted, and garments made and forwarded to the men in the armed forces. Reports from the Catholic Maori Club and junior branch of the society revealed much good work accomplished.

Membership had been depleted because of the war but members were resolved not to let the work of the society suffer on that account. Both Father Burke and Mr. Feeney congratulated the society on a successful year’s effort.

The occasional address was given by Father Burke.

The honorary secretary, Mr. T. McGlynn, was given a vote of thanks for his work.
