AUCKLAND TRAGEDY

TWO MEN SUFFOCATED GORSE FIRE OFT OF CONTROL (P.A.) Auckland, March 15. Two men were suffocated while fighting a gorse scrub fire which got out of control on the Rodney golf course, a mile north of Wark worth. The victims were:— Selwyn Morrison, married, about 50 years, a farmer of Warkworth. Rudolph Wiilmott Ross Pulham, married, 53, storekeeper, of Matakana.

The victims were members of a party of six men engaged burning off about two and a-half acres of cut grass and gorse on the links. The wind freshened and the flames spread rapidly until from 40 to 50 acres were ablaze. When the fire spread to a large area of titree adjoining the golf course, Morrison and Pulham started to climb through a fence to combat the new menace. The smoke was very thick and heavy. They were seen to be overcome by the smoke and their bodies were recovered shortly afterwards by other members of the party.
