CHASE AT AUCKLAND

DETECTIVE AND MAN PRISONER RECAPTURED / Auckland, Feb. 18. After an exciting chase through busy city streets, the prisoner who escaped from the cells at the Hamilton police station on Saturday night was recaptured in Auckland early yesterday afternoon. He was Clifford Fox. aged 20, a labourer, who was arrested at Gisborne last week on a charge of breaking and entering a dwelling in Hamilton and stealing a quantity of furniture and clothing. Fox was seen in Newton at about lunch time, and was followed into the city by Detective F. Gordon, of the central police station. The detective spoke to the man near the back entrance to St. James’ Theatre in Lome Street, but Fox made another bid for liberty. He ran along Lome Street, down Wellesley Street and up Queen Street to a street running along the northern side of the amusement park. The detective, who was hampered by a heavy overcoat, kept hard on the heels of the man, who ran down as far as Victoria Street West. At that stage there was a brief struggle, but the man broke away and ran to Kingston Street, where he entered a large building. Other detectives were summoned. and Fox was found hiding in the building. Fox was one of two men alleged to be concerned in the theft of furl niture and effects from the residence lof Mr and Mrs. N. G. Bray, of 35 1 Mill Street. Hamilton, during the absence of the occupiers on holiday at 1 Rotorua. The goods were stated to I have been disposed of to an unsuspecting Hamilton dealer.
