HITHER AND THITHER

Farewell and Presentation. At a combined committee and choir meeting of the League of Mothers, held yesterday at the home of the president, Mrs. E. W. Carter, Gonville, opportunity was taken to farewell a member, Mrs. T. Malone, who is leaving Wanganui to reside in Wellington. She was presented with a gift, and good wishes were expressed. Songs were sung by Mrs. Lockelt and Mrs. Malone. Mrs. Carter reported that a presentation had been made recently to the treasurer, Mrs. McKinnon, who has left Wanganui to live in Invercargill. Prisoners of War. According to a Wellington exchange a letter received last week from a prisoner of war in Germany, dated October 15, says that Red Cross parcels have not been arriving for some time at the camp. The letter reads: “We have been in our new camp for two weeks now and have settled down to wait for the end. For the first time in two years I am sleeping on a spring bed. They take some getting used to, but they are heaven after some I have had since I have been a soldier. They have a new idea here. We live in little huts, 12 men to a hut, instead of big barracks, and it is much more pleasant. Over the last nine months Red Cross parcels have been few and far between, and so far we have nothing for issue here. For five months last year we received a parcel nearly every week, but all that is just a beautiful dream.” Wanganui East W.C.T.U.

The Wanganui East branch of the W.C.T.U. held its first meeting of the year in W.E. Methodist Hall. The president reminded members of the women’s day of prayer on March 12. Mrs. Ogier was elected delegate to the convention at Palmerston North. Owing to sickness Mrs. Ogier was unable to start the Young People's League, as arranged, and the opening date will be given later. A very successful Cradle Roll party was reported. Mrs. Shute and Mrs. Conybeer were hostesses for the afternoon tea.
