GOEBBELS’ MESSAGE

GERMAN FRONT CAN BEAR ANY BURDEN (Reed, 7.30 p.m.) London, Dec. 31. Goebbels, in a New Year message, declared: “When I last spoke to the Germans the winter crisis in the east had reached a climax. Only by throwing in our last reserves did our troops succeed in withstanding the Bolshevist onslaught. We can now only lose the war through our own mistakes. Our war potential is enormously increased and if properly used will be the turning point in the war. Whether we like it or not, we are forced to hold out till the victorious conclusion of the wai, What a few years ago was merely a question of courage and national enthusiasm has now become a matter of toughness and moral endurance, and the enemy has pinned his hopes on this. He thinks we are equal to a long war as regards material things but not spiritually. The enemy believes the miracle of 1918 will be repeated. He will be disappointed. Germany is defended by a front that can bear any burden laid on it.”
