SIR NEVILE HENDERSON London, Dec. 30. The death has occurred of Sir Nevile Henderson, who was British Ambassador in Berlin at the outbreak of the war. He had been ill for some time. The Evening Standard diarist re/eals tba„t Sir Nevile Henderson re-
ceived sums aggregating five figures for his book “Failure of a Mission,” the story of his Ambassadorship in Berlin, ail of which he gave to charity. His doctors told him six months ago that he had about six weeks to live, and he decided to write a book “to take his mind off things.” It was the story of his dog. A letter arrived at his home a few hours after his death advising him that the manuscrip had been accepted for publication.
Sir Nevile Henderson, who was 60 years of age, began his career in the Diplomatic Service in 1905, and was successively third secretary at St. Fetersbury (1905-8), Tokio (1909-1.1), St. Fetersbury (1912-14), Rome (1914), and Nish (1915). He was recalled to the Foreign Office in 1915, and was First Secretary in Paris in 1916, Counsellor in Constantinople in 1921, and Acting British High Commissioner in Constantinople from November, 1922, till September. 1924. He was then appointed to the Residency in Cairo, with the rank of .Minister Plenipotentiary, and he was transferred in that capacity to Paris in 1928. The subsequent steps in his career wore as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at Belgrade (1929-35), Ambassador to Argentina and Minister to Paraguay (1935-37), and Am* bassLcor in Berlin (1937-39). 'Since 1941 he has been a group commander in the Home Guard in Englu.i i. He was created K.C.M.G. in 1932 ana G.C.M.G. in 1939.
