BREAD IN BRITAIN
WHAT RATIONING HAS EFFECTED (Recd. 9.40 p.m.) Sydney, Jan. 1. “Britons have, almost forgotten what white bread looks like. They eat a loaf resembling wholemeal but more finely ground. They would like more meat and fruit, which are both in short supply.” Mr. M. W. Bankes Amery who, with Mr. R. C. Hinton, has come to Australia for consultation on food problems, said this here to-day. Rationing in Great Britain, he added, has been organised very successfully by the Ministry of Food, and despite the restrictions it imposed it was very popular, because it ensured adequate supplies to those who needed them most and guarded the public against unfair distribution.
