U-BOAT CAMPAIGN
DECEMBER DECLINE GERMANS’ REFERENCE TO “COMING BATTLE” (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Recd. 6.30 p.m.) London, Dec. 31. Allied shipping losses have fallen in December. The German Admiralty s spokesman, Luetzow, speaking Xi the Berlin radio, said this was clue to Britain using new sea routes in the Atlantic, which is ten times the size of Europe, and also to the weather, which in the autumn and winter is rough and the visibility is usually bad. In addition the enemy is working to improve defences against Üboats, and consequently the temporarily low figures of the shipping losses do not indicate that the enemy has mastered the U-boat threat. The German news agency announces that special underwater craft have lately been operating with Üboats. One type is comparable to a floating dockyard and can repair damaged U-boats on the high seas. Another carries supplies. There are also tank submarines operating far from home. The announcement referred to the “coming battle against enemy merchant ships on the seven seas and to the doors of enemy key ports.”
