LIVESTOCK MARKETS

TARANAKI REVIEW The past week has accounted for the usual volume of trade, and business generally throughout the livestock markets continues to be mainly confined to that conducted under the hammer. Entries in all branches that have come under this heading have been dealt with under good competition and prices have shown little to no change compared with those of a week ago, reports the Farmers' Co-op. in their weekly review. Further bull fairs have been held and all top quality animals that have been offered have been sold up to vendors' expectations. Sales of store stock, particularly of station-bred cattle, are in strong demand, with values firm, but entries are not large and trading is confined to those that come to hand at the weekly sale centres. Very little business is reported in the store sheep section, mainly owing to the absence of quotations. Furthermore, graziers prefer to retain their holdings for shearing rather than test the market at the moment. Nevertheless a good sale results for any lines that come to hand. The dairy cattle market witnesses entries considerably smaller. This is only to be expected as the season is now well advanced. However, good competition prevails for best Quality cows and heifers close to profit and' in profit. The yearling Jersey heifer market, together with that of other replacement cattle, continues to see values on a par with those of the previous week. Beef prices are also firm and late rates have been web maintained. The same may be said about fat sheen values. Large entries of Jersey oddments have been dealt with at all sale centres and all classes have. been sold under very free competition. In fact, an advance in rates in some cases is reported. Keen export comnetition has assisted sales considerably. Entries of pigs that have come to hand have been from average to good and late values have been fully maintained.
