MARTON NOTES

MARTON CRICKET CLUB REVIEW OF PAST SEASON The annual meeting of the Marton Cricket Club will be held in the N.Z. Farmers’ Co-op. Distributing Co.’s rooms to-night at 7.30 o’clock. The president, in a review of the past season, states:—Although unsuccessful in winning the competition, the club was well in the running right to the last round. We congratulate the R.N.Z.A.F. on their winning of the championship, which they thoroughly deserved. Like other clubs we have had a tough time fielding teams at various times, but not once did we have to forfeit, due mainly to our very young members who donned their whites when we were hard pressed for a team. It is with deep regret we record the passing of one of our highly respected players in Ron Shields. He was a cricketer in the real sense of the word, both on and off the field, and cricket in Rangitikei will be the poorer. In showing their respect, members played the following game wearing black armlets. The young members of our club shaped extremely well, with both bat and ball, and we should have no worry as regards playing supporters when this conflict is over. It was with great excitement we received word that Victor Anderson was safe and prisoner of war after nothing had been heard of him for 12 months. The club is in a good financial position and we also have a good stock of gear, so that when we start playing again, we will not want for much in the way of gear. Our club extends its thanks to all its supporters, both players and non-players, to the lady helpers and to all who assisted with the functioning of the club. NAVY LEAGUE DANCE

The dance organised by the ladies of the Tutaenui district in aid of the Navy League “shop” on Saturday night was most successful. There was a large attendance and the takings were £2l. The music was supplied by Lawton Barry's orchestra, whilst extras were played by Miss I. Hammond and Messrs. W. Gulley, G. Denbow and J. Fowler. The cigarette competition was won by Mr. F. J. Christensen and the cake by Mrs. C. A. Tidy. The Monte Carlos were won by Miss Hawkins and Mr. Bartlett and Miss Ell and Mr. N. Abbott. 'The supper was in charge of Mrs. H. ‘R. Gaisford and Mrs. H. J. Gould, assisted by lady helpers and the M.C.’s were Messrs. C. Bidwell and A. Oracle. HAWKESTONE GOLF CLUB The final for the senior championship of the Hawkestone Golf Club was played on Saturday between P. Gronn and L. Saywell and was won by the latter player. BOWLING NOTES The first challenge match of the sea'son for the Gatrell Bulldog was played on the Marton green during the week-end, the holders (S. Goebel and F. Green) being defeated by A. Tilley and R. Lewis. On Saturday next the club will be represented by five rinks at the opening of the Bulls Club. The rinks will be selected on Friday evening. Entries for all the Marton competitions close on Monday, October 19. FIRE BRIGADE EUCHRE TOURNEY Saturday night euchre tourneys at the Marton Fire Brigade station maintain their popularity, fifty-four players taking part on Saturday last. The winners were: Ladies, Mrs. Burbury and Mrs. L. Gordon; gents, Mr. W. Rankin and Mr. W. Shindler. CIVIC THEATRE, MARTON In “Mary Names the Day,” at the Civic Theatre, Lew Ayres is forced to make a decision of the greatest import—whether or not to continue his career. He quits the hospital following the death of his fiancee, Laraine Day, and is brought back through the ministrations of Lionel Barrymore, again the crusty Dr. Gillespie of the series. Red Skelton returns with more of his hilarious antics. RED CROSS BALL Arrangements for the Red Cross Ball, which is to take place in the Civic Theatre. Marton, on Tuesday, October 20, are in full swing, and the energetic committee is doing all in its power to make the function an outstanding success. A military orchestra has been engaged from Wanganui to supply the music and promises to be up-to-the-minute with the latest dance numbers. A buffet supper of saveloys and savouries will be served. The arrangements are in the capable hands of Mrs. K. Glasgow. Visitors are expected from Wanganui, Palmerston North and surrounding districts, and all patrons are assured of an excellent evening's dancing.
