SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Miss Betty Hodder, of New Plymouth was a week-end visitor to Wanganui. Mrs. K. Sandford, Lower Hutt, is the guest of Mrs. W. H. Sandford, Raetihi. Mrs. L. Tilley, Dannevirke, is visiting Wanganui, and is the guest of Mrs. H. Tilley, Ingestre Street. Privates J. Leyland, F. Seeling, and S. Church, of the W.A.A.C., are visiting Wanganui. Miss V. Fiirons, secretary of the Wanganui Y.W.C.A.. has returned from Palmerston North, where she was the guest of Mrs. A. Bansanti. Miss Jessie Ross, Wanganui, has been visiting Wellington. Mrs. F. Smith has returned to Wanganui from Wellington. Mrs. C. R. White, College Street, will return to-day from Masterton, where she has been visiting her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Campbell White. Mrs. P. Graham, St. Hill Street, has returned from Marton, accompanied by her daughter, Mrs. V. W. Fuller-ton-Smith, who will be her guest for a few weeks. HITHER AND THITHER Sacred Heart Old Girls’ Association Reunion. The annual dinner of the Sacred Heart Convent Old Girls’ Association passed off very happily at the Savage Club Hall on Saturday night. On arrival the guests were received by the president, Mrs. Dobbs who, at the dinner, also gave a very pleasing address of welcome. Two gestures, warmly applauded by all present, I were the greetings and good wishes sent from the Rev. Mother in a letter read by the secretary, Miss Ruscoe, and the short surprise visit by Rev. Fathers Egan and Abbott to express their felicitations also to the assembly of old girls. The following toasts were honoured: “The Pope and the King,” proposed by Mrs. Dobbs; “Our Alma Mater,” proposed by Miss A. Robinson, responded to by Miss K. Cullinane; “Absent Friends,” proposed by Mrs. T. McCarthy (vicepresident), while musical honours were also accorded the president, secretary, and treasurer (Miss E. Clark). A most enjoyable dance followed the dinner, and so passed a fitting finale to the annual reunion celebrations of the S.H.C.O.G.A.

St. David’s Ladies’ Guild. The annual “at home” of the above guild was held recently at the Hylton Hall, Aramoho. The hall was tastefully decorated with bowls and vases of flowers which, combined with a fine day, gave a beautiful spring effect. The afternoon was officially opent. by the Rev. W. J. Berry, who extended a welcome to all visitors. A splendid musical programme had ben arranged by Mrs. R. H. Tizard and was enjoyed by all. Songs were sung by Mrs. Perrett, Mrs .Fossette, Miss Boyd and Mr. R. H. Tizard; vocal duets by Mesdames Tarrant and Fossette; also elocutionary items, Mrs. R. Piper and F. Reid; violin solo, Mrs. Shardlow, accompanied by Miss Missen. Mrs. Tizard was the accompanist. The president of the guild (Mrs. Greig) thanked the artists for coming so willingly, also the members of the guild for their work for lhe day. A dainty afternoon tea was then served by members of the guild. The pronouncing of the Benediction brought a happy gathering to a close. All the artists were presented with posies of flowers by Mrs. Greig. Mrs. Simpson and Miss Dixon were responsible for the floral work. AIR FORCE RELATIONS MONTHLY MEETING One of the features of the monthly meeting of Air Force Relations, held yesterday afternoon in the Victoria Hall, was the reading of a number of interesting extracts from letters sent by Wanganui airmen from different places overseas. Acknowledgment of parcels sent by A.F.R. were also received. The president, Mrs. S. G. Millen, presided. Prior to the observance of the silent prayer sympathy was expressed with those who had suffered bereavement, and members were asked to pray for those who were suffering anxiety. A vote of thanks, with hearty acclamation, was passed to Mr. H. J. Trussell for the wonderful concert presented to aid the three organisations of the fighting forces. “It was a fine gesture on his part, and Mr. Trussell and his band of musicians had willingly given their services free for the benefit of the three organisations,” said Mrs. Millen. The secretary, Mrs. A. D. Brodie, read the minutes, also some of the letters oi thanks from the recipients of parcels. It was announced that A.F.R. would be the hostesses at the Y.M.C.A. hostel tea next Sunday, with Mrs. W. L. Burgess as convener, of great interest to relatives of airmen overseas, was a leaflet enclosed in a letter giving information of the excellent arrangements made for extending hospitality to visiting airmen in England by an organisation headed by Lady Frances Ryder.

It was decided to have a display towards the end of the month in the shop window of the A.F.A. parcels packing room in Selwyn Buildings, and members were asked to bring anything of an Air Force interest for the display. Sympathy was expressed with the treasurer, Mrs. R. Nelson, who had been ill. The new committees for the ensuing year are as follows: Wool, Mrs. P. Greager and assistants; hussifs, Mesdames Merewether and Jones; parcels, Mesdames A. H. Mac Lean and Nelson, assisted by Mesdames Takarangi, Greager and F. P. Talboys; entertainment, Mesdames C. R. White, A. H. Mac Lean and Merewether. The new secretary, Mrs. A. D. Brodie, was introduced to the gathering. Mrs. Russell Scoular entertained with songs delightfully sung. Miss N. Gamman was the accompanist. The hostesses were Mesdames Linton. Verrell, G. . E. Cutfield, H. A. Gatward and Simpson. CHRIST CHURCH MOTHERS’ UNION INTERESTING PAPER ON THE ADOLESCENT CHILD The October meeting of the Christ Church branch of the Mothers’ Union was very well attended, the guests being the mothers of the children attending the Sunday School. The service in the church was taken by the Ven. Archdeacon J. R. Young, who spoke briefly on the paper set for the day, “The Adolescent Child,” this being the fifth in the series for the campaign for Christian Order. He also reminded those present of the “Quiet Day” to be held on October 22, when women’s organisations of all churches are invited to take part. The day will commence with Litany and address at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served in the schoolroom and the afternoon service will commence at 1.45 p.m. with intercession and address. At 2.30 p.m. there will be a special service. Afternoon tea will follow. Members then adjourned to the

Parish Hall, where the enrolling member (Mrs. W. Lambert) read a most interesting paper on the “Adolescent Child.” As the paper was lengthy there was no organised discussion, but members spoke in high praise,of the sound advice and information given. The names of many helpful books for the young were also given and many members took advantage of the opportunity to secure the titles. The secretary read an invitation from All Saints’ Mothers’ Union to their birthday meeting next Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Lambert stated that she would give another address on the life of Mary Sumner, in the Parish Hall on Friday afternoon. October 30. These talks have proved most valuable to both old and new members and have been very well attended. As the Parish Hall is not available during the first week of November, it has been arranged to hold the November meeting on the 19th of that month at the usual time and to hold a special carol service and social afternoon on the first Thursday in December.
