EGG DISTRIBUTION

PROVINCIAL DEPOT PLAN Efforts to form a scheme for the establishment in Wanganui of a central egg depot are being made by a sub-committee appointed early this month by the Wanganui District Primary Production Council. Tne steps taken followed a suggestion made by the Department of Agriculture (Fields Division) for overcoming distribution problems. It was stated that supplies of eggs were required for New Zealand’s armed lorces, Allied forces, and also shipping, the war having created exceptional demands. These demands had coincided with increased domestic consumption, and were being borne mainly by producers supplying the main centres, particularly Auckland and Wellington. The department felt that at times some country areas were adequately supplied with eggs when the main centres were very bare.

The Director of the Fields Division, Mr. R. B. Tennent (Wellington) suggested that if country districts could be organised on a reasonable basis so that any surplus eggs could be made available to Hie main centres, or for priority demands, the general position would be improved and the return to the producer maintained on a more stable basis.

Mr. Tennent commented that the difficulty could be overcome if receiving depots were set up in the main uroan areas. All producers normally supplying any particular area would deliver eggs to the depot, rather than direct to individual retailers, who cc-uld secure their normal requirements from the depot. Any surplus could be sent to the main centres.

Proposals made by the department have been considered by the sub-com-mittee set up in Wanganui, and when a local scheme is formed it will be placed before the Primary Production Council.
