Pilot-Officer Gordon Webby, serving overseas, has been promoted to thr rank of Flying Officer, according to a cable received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Webby, 41 Nixon Street, Wanganui East. The cable also stated that he was fit ano well. Detective-Sergeant J. Walsh, of the Auckland detective staff and formerly of Wanganui, has been promoted to the rank of senior detective in that city. He joined the police force in Wellington in 1917, was promoted to the detective office there in 1920 and in 1926 was transferred to Wanganui, where he was in charge of the detective office. He was promoted detec-tive-sergeant in 1935 and transferred to Auckland. Senior-Detective Walsh has been connected with inquiries into major crimes in the Dominion during the past 20 years and he has frequently represented the police in the prosecution of cases in different parts of the Dominion.

The death occurred recently of Mr. James Milne Adam, an elder of the First Church of Otago, who suffered a fatal seizure when on Home Guard duty. He was a grandson of Mr. James Adam, one of the pioneer settlers of Otago, who arrived with Dr. Thomas Burns in the Philip Laing in 1848. Mr. Adam was born at Milton in 1881. He became a civil servant in the service of the Justice Department in 1899, remaining at Invercargill till 1905, when he was transferred as clerk for two yaers to Riverton, and from there, successively, to Cromwell, Lawrence and Queenstown. He was second ckjrk to the Christchurch Court till 1922, and then became registrar ol the Supreme Court at New Plymouth, followed by similar appointments at Hamilton and Invercargill. He was appointed registrar of the Supreme Court and official assignee at Dunedin in 1928. He was a barrister of the court.
