ARTS AND CRAFIS SOCIETY TALK BY MR. G. SAUNDERS Success attended the members’ night of the Wanganui Arts and Crafts Society held in Dustin’s Rooms on Tuesday. I'he gathering was largely attended. Mr. F. G. Saunders, M.A., gave an interesting talk on aspects m quickart. He pointed out that all artisans (.hand workers) in anc.ent Greece were looked on as artists, ana that not only sculpture and pictures, out such articles as pottery, furniture, and fabrics, besides being beautiiuily made, were designed lor every-day use. Mr. Saunders’ remarks were .illustrated by prints ol some of the most famous Greek vases in European museums. He also referred to tne wonderful perfection of the ancient Greek sculptors and to the fact that sculptors in their search for beauty in tlje human figure might not be satisfied with one model but might use several to make the statue penect in all parts. He also referred to Greek architecture and exhibited prims of the Parthenon, in Athens, which is still a world wonder. Members passed a vote of thanks to Mr. Saunders. The talk was preceded by a programme of vocal and instrumental music, including pianoforte solo by M|ss Thea Collier, a sonata by Miss Doiothy Hughes Johnson (violin) and Private Rowland Trema in (piano), and songs by Mrs. Scoular. Mr. W. Bailey Martin, and Mr. J. S. D. Tizard. On the motion of the president. Mr. C. L. Dui*'.n. the performers were given a vote ef tfcanks.
