INFORMATION WANTED

PRIMARY PRODUCTION COUNCILS

(Special) Wellington, Sept. 23 The Primary Production Councils and District Committees throughout New Zealand are again being caller .upon to attend to the interests oi farmers in two of the assignment' given them by the Minister of Primary Production for War Purposes, the Hon. W. J. Polson. “The first of these assignments,’ stated Mr. Polson, "relates to shearing. District Councils, through their committees, are asked to contact al! farmers and explore the question oi labour for shearing. Committee-men will find that some farmers have the position in hand and are able to get their sheep shorn without assistance, These farmers may also be able to assist others not so well placed. For those who cannot get shearers the procedure will be that committeemen report the circumstances to the District Council, whose business it will be to try and make suitable arrangements.” “The second assignment,” continued the Minister, “concerns the acreage o! potatoes due to be planted this season before December 31. The information is wanted from every grower outside a borough area who grows one acre or more. Each committeeman will have a list of farmers in his territory, and is required to submit to his council secretary the acreage grown by each farmer. Nil returns will be rendered where the acreage is less than one. "The information is useless unless it is accurate, and the area named by the farmer should, in all cases be the area he intends to plant, and for which he actually has seed. Subsequent surveys of expected and actual yields will be made so as to enable theGovernment to deal with possible heavy or light crops. The work of committeemen will be eased considerably by farmers voluntarily supplying the information about shearing and potatoes to the committeemen responsible for their district. “The potato survey is the alternative of registering potato growers, a process,” Mr. Polson added, "that has many objectionable features. It is preferable tor farmers to handle this matter by co-operative methods. "It is a certainty that, as the war continues, the work of district councils and committees will become more difficult, and farmers are asked to lighten this wherever possible by giving information quickly, voluntarily and accurately to their committeemen as soon as they know the kind of information that is wanted."
