RATIONING PLANS
ARRANGEMENTS MADE IN AUSTRALIA Canberra, May 15. Powers to declare that any commodity or service in Australia may be I rationed are vested in the Customs I Minister, Senator Keane, by regulations which have been gazetted. The’ only limitation is that the Minister cannot declare any service supplied or carried on by a State unless the Government concerned agrees. The chairman of the Rationing Commission, Mr. A. W. Coles, announced that ration books would be introduced throughout Australia on June 13. This is nearly three weeks earlier than the date originally anticipated. Mr. Coles said that, broadly speaking, the British system of rationing would be followed, but would be adapted to Australian conditions. Coupons would be issued for a period of a year. Restrictions might be imposed to compel coupon-holders to spread their purchases over the year. The commission would decide how many coupons would be equivalent to each rationed article, but the classes of goods to be rationed would be decided by the Federal Government. The Tea Control Board has been given power to control coffee as well as tea. The board will take over the importation and distribution of coffee. This does not mean that coffee rationing has been introduced. DRIVE FOR MANPOWER Sydney, May 15 The breadth of Australia's drive for manpower and an all-out war effort is indicated by a number of new moves. Rationalisation of industry is being pushed ahead with the utmost speed. The manufacture of some 60 unessential articles, ranging from bath heaters to billiard tables, is prohibited in New South Wales from May 22. The following goods listed have been prohibited in Victoria and i South Australia since the end of Feb- . ruary: Jewellery (other than wede ding rings), toys, men’s evening wear, s garters and socks, suspenders, and e many items of household furniture, including lounge suites, settees, and , easy chairs, also fur coats and electric dish-washing machines. ,
