ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS AT AUCKLAND
PRACTICE WITH LIVE SHELLS I SE OF SEARCHLIGHTS. (Press Assn.* Auckland. Dec. 10. Anti-aircraft guns went into action between three and four o'clock this morning, when a practice with live shells was carried out, the target being a drogue towed by an aeroplane. Although clouds were low, searchlights picked up the target several times as it flew over the city and suburbs. The sound of the guns awakened many people, w ho were reassured by E.P.S. workers that the shooting was merely a practice. Brigadier P. H. Bell, officer commanding the Northern Military District. said to-day that the practice had been effective. "Valuable experience was gained, although it was necessary to restrict the firing in order to observe safety,” he added. The secretary of the Emergency Precautions Service, Mr. K. Usmar, said a magnificent response was made by wardens, who were notified by telephone late last night.
