NURSING SERVICES QUEEN

CHOICE MADE YESTERDAY ' WANGANUI PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL A meeting to appoint a committee and make a choice of a queen candidate to represent the Nursing Services in the Wanganui Patriotic Queen Carnival was held yesterday morning in the City Council Chambers, Mrs. J. J. Scott presiding. Mr. H. M. Keesing, chairman of the Patriotic Committee, and Mr. J. P. Wells (secretary) were also present. Mr. Keesing explained the methods to be adopted in running the carnival. Mrs. Scott was appointed chairwoman of the committee and others elected were: Mrs. A. H. Mac Lean (Mothers' Helpers’ Society), I»T!ss Wilcox (Registered Nurses' Association), Mrs. E. G. Wilberfoss and Mrs. T. Hine (Plunket Society), Mrs. J. C. Wickham and Mrs. A. McPhail (W.D.F.U.), Mrs. J. Brine and Mrs. Rockel, with another to be appointed (St. John Ambulance), Mrs. F. Wagstaff (Townswomen's Guild), Miss Honare (Belverdale Hospital), Mrs. Takarangi, Messrs. T. L. Sperring, Alec Hatrick, P. H. Hartland and Dr. H. L. Widdowson, with power to add. The president, or secretary, of the various Red Cross sub-centres will come automatically on the committee and these members will form committees in each suburb. Mrs. Takarangi stated that Putiki will also cooperate. Mrs. C. R. White was elected secretary and Mrs. W. T. White as treasurer.

There were four nominations for queen. They were: Sister McLeod, of the Belverdale Hospital, proposed by the staff; Miss O. M. .Marchant, nominated by the staff of the Public Hospital and Registered Nurses' Association; Nurse Linda White, of the Public Hospital, nominated by Mrs. J. J. Scott and Mrs. T. Soundy; Nurse Jean Fisher, of the Public Hospital, nominated by the Student Nurses’ Association. Miss O. M. Marchant was elected as the queen and Misses L. White, J. Fisher and McLeod are to be the princesses. The promoters of the Fun Parlour signified their intention of donating the first Friday night’s proceeds to the Nursing Services Queen. At a meeting to be held on Friday afternoon further plans will be made for the campaign.
