Elocutionary Successes. Considerable success was achieved by Miss Gladys Tonkins, of Wanganui, at the Manawatu Competition Festival held during the school vacation. She won the ladies’ elocutionary championship by gaining the highest aggregate marks and highest points, also the silver cup donated by Mr, R. Bailey, Her other successes were lirst in the open Shakespearean recital, the musical monologue and leading at sight. She also won a second in the character sketch and in the New Zealand recital. Miss Tonkins is a pupil of Mrs. G. Lovegrove (Gladys Gamman). Wanganui.* Parties for Bride-to-be. Miss Muriel Dashfield, of Wanganui, whose marriage takes place shortly, has been entertained at a number of parties recently. The Castlecliff Ladies’ Surf Club, of which the bride-to-be is captain, was responsible for a jolly surprise party last week. Mrs. W. Hall and Mrs. W. Upton were joint hostesses at a gift evening held at the latter’s residence, Guyton Street, and a kitchen evening, at which about, forty friends were present, was arranged by Mrs. L. A. Falconer, Misses V. Edwards, 1. Barlow and S. Dyer, who are to be the attendants at the wedding. Grove of Trees as Memorial. As a memorial to the late Mrs. W. J. Polson, a grove of trees was suggested at the annual meeting of the Central Taranaki Executive of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union held at Stratford last week. Mrs. H. A. Hunt spoke of the great work that had been done by Mrs. Polson and the wonderful help she had always given to the division. Her kindness ana thought for all was always manifest. Airman Honoured. Mr. Keith O'Donnell, a member of the R.N.Z.A.F., was the guest of honour at a dinner on Thursday given by the Maori people of Arakunu and Rakato, when he was presented with a greenstone tiki and envelope by his Maori friends. The same evening the Maoris of Kaiwhaiki also honoured Mr. O'Donnell, when the meeting house was crowded with Maori and pakeha friends. The decorations were in patriotic colours of red, white and blue and the Kaiwhaiki Orchestra rendered popular music. A dainty supper was served, after which an envelope was handed Mr. O'Donnell on behalf of the Kaiwhaiki Patriotic Committee. The evening was brought to a close by the Maoris singing the Maori song of farewell. Card Party. A "500" party was held by the Springvale-Mosston Sub-centre of the Red Cross Society at St. George's School. First prizes were won by Mrs. L. Denman and Miss M. Macdonald, and consolation prizes went to Mrs. S. V. Smith and Mr. A. H. Charles. A cake given by Mrs. Reid was competed for and won by Mesdames Smith and Rountree. Mr. and Mrs. Fell were thanked for their hospitality, Ambulance for N.Z. Forestry Troops. Early this month Lady Louis Mountbatten, on behalf of the BritishAmerican Ambulance Corps, presented to the High Commissioner, Mr. W. J. Jordan, an ambulance for the use of New Zealand Forestry troops in Great Britain. The presentation was made at the New Zealand Forces Club in Charing Cross road. The British-American Ambulance Corps has its head office in New York. The organisation has already given about 600 ambulances to Great Britain and the Allies. Many are from namesake towns in America.
