FOR WAIOURU CAMP
SEVERAL SCHEME THIRTEEN CITY WORKERS
DEPARTURE NEXT MONDAY About 50 workers on scheme 13 employed in Wanganui city are to be drafted to labouring work at Waiouru camp and will leave next Monday Some of them are more than 50 years of age, and, naturally, are not looking forward to the change of climate. Representation opposing the move on behalf of some of the older men is to be made to-day, and the rate of pay to be offered the remainder will be gone into. It is contended by the men that on such work they will be entitled to the full Public Works rate of pay. It is not yet clear that they are to get that rate, though it Is likely. The men will be housed and kept on the job, but will have to take their own gear. Some who have had experience of winter temperatures at Waiouru are giving sound advice as to the number of blankets to be taken —“Nothing under seven,” is the sug-
gestion. Work within the city done under scheme 13 will be tapered off to some extent when the men are removed. Some 10 or 12 of them have been engaged on improvem' • at Virginia Lake, and others will no doubt be drawn from the municipal golf links at Gonville and the Wanganui East Esplanade. It is understood that younger and fitter men will be taken in preference to older ones.
