AT THE CIVIC THEATRE "EAST SIDE OF HEAVEN” Headed by Bing Crosby and Joan Blondell, one of the most capable casts ever found in a single picture was assembled for Universal’s “East Side of Heaven,” which will be finally screened at the Civic Theatre this (Wednesday) evening. Bing and Joan are co-starred in this film which features hit songs, romance and comedy against a strong human background. Mischa Auer, often referred to as the mad Russian, tops the supporting cast. “Sandy,” ten-months-old baby of a Los Angeles milkman, does such a surprising job that studio executives already have the parents’ signature on a long-term contract. RANGITIKEI RUGBY SATURDAY’S MATCHES AT MARTON Two interesting Rugby matches wifi be played on the Marton Park on Saturday. The junior Shield match between Old Boys and Hunterville will commence at 1.30 sharp, as a curtainraiser to the representative match between Wanganui B and Rangitikei teams at 3 p.m. ST. JOHN AMBULANCE SUCCESSFUL “SHOP” DAY Members of St. John Ambulance had a busy day on Tuesday when they conducted a "shop” in the auction mart (kindly loaned by Sutcliffe Bros ) m aid of bandages, etc., for overseas forces. Under the supervision of Mrs. H. Grut and Mrs. M. Wysocki, jnr., the staff of assistants accomplished wonders in the disposal of goods that were generously donated towards this deserving cause.

A "Mock Court” created a good deal of amusement and arrests were frequent by Constables R. Lewis and J. Dunean, who had no hesitation in arresting all and sundry on charges I hat provoked roars of laughter from an interested audience of the "young fry.” As judge, M . E. A. Dowling carried out his judicial duties in a manner befitting his position. There were a number of exciting incidents, especially when "Aunt Daisy” was arrested and carried to the judicial chamber and fined £1 on several charges which elicited roars of laughter. The result was that £2O was collected in fines —a very satisfactory result.

The “shop’’ proved a great success and all the goods were disposed of at a profit, the total reaching £l2O 17s and, with the mock court, a total of £l4O 17s, which included a donation of £9 6s. Sutcliffe Bros, for the loan of the shop, to Mrs. Scott Wilson (Wanganui) for donation of belt goods and to Mr. J. Powell (Auckland) for donation of a picture and to all members of St. John Ambulance and well-wishers for their splendid assistance in contributing to the success of the “shop” day. Marshall, chairman of the Primary Production Council for Rangitikei, advises that eggs for export will not be collected until about November. Before that time, eggs should be laid down and preserved so that when the export season cbmes, more fresh eggs will be available. Children and onlookers to 9.15 p.m. will be charged one shilling and gentlemen 2s and ladies Is 6d for the adults' dance. A full orchestra has been engaged and preparations are being made for a record gathering. BASKETBALL HOROWHENUA v. TE KAWAU The Te Kawau basketball team played the first representative game of the season at Rangiotu on Saturday, gaining a meritorious victory over Horowhenua by 22 to 17. The latter, as usual, fielded a very fine team and for the first spell play was very open, Te Kawau leading by 10 to 9. In the second spell a fine exhibition of basketball was given by both teams and piay was fast and open. The Te Kawau team gave their supporters a pleasant surprise by developing sound combination to run out winners by five goals. In the match between the B teams, Horowhenua turned the tables, winning by 18 to 8. Mr. Roy Algar was referee in both matches. Te Kawau v. Feilding The selector, Mr. J.
