Championship. D. Roots 288, J. Smart 287, J. Bates 286, J. Huston >B4, R. Shepherd 281. There will be a shoot for the Hamerton Cup on Saturday. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. In view of the difficulty being experienced regarding the erection ol a new residence for the headmaster of the Patea school, which is being apparently held up through-differences of opinion with regard to the site for the building, it was decided at a meeting of the Patea Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday evening that a deputation wait on the school committee regarding tne erection of the residence and that the secretary, Mr. Gunnison, should also write to the Minister of Education stressing the urgent necessity lor the erection ot the new school house. It was reported that members of the school committee and others had worked under great difficulties in converting the ground round the school from unkept paddocks to well-planned gardens and playgrounds. They did not wish the site ol the new residence to be on these grounds as was desired by the Wanganui Education Board, especially when there was a suitable section owned by the board on the other side of the road just opposite the school. The school grounds, as planned, did not lend themselves to alteration. With regard to a suggestion brought forward by Mr. Cathro that a bus service to the Hawera High School for the benefit of Patea scholars, be brought into being, it was decided that enquiries be made regarding costs of such a service.

“Under present conditions, when children going to Hawera High School travel by train, it means a very long day for them,” said Mr. Cathro, who also pointed out that when the train had been over an hour late the children were kept late for school, which did not give them the full benefit of High School education. At the meeting it was also decided to write a letter to the Minister of Railways asking that consideration be given to the making of a ramp at the

railway station in preference to the present steps, which are a source of danger to those coming from ar.d going to the station. A letter is to be written to the Patea stationmaster inviting him to join the Chamber of Commerce and informing him that be would be mode an honorary member.
