FREE AMBULANCE

SUCCESSFUL APPEAL COLLECTION TOTALS MORE THAN LAST YEAR The annual appeal of the Wanganui St. John Free Ambulance Service was held yesterday, the amount of the collection showing a good increase on last year’s return. The street collection resulted in £l7l 15s lOd being raised in addition to donations from annual subscribers, which amounted lo £45 ss, giving a grand total of £217 0s lOd. In addition the service expects to receive about £3o#from annual subscribers such as unions, societies and other similar organisations. “We are highly delighted with the result of the appeal and wish to thank the people of Wanganui for the splendid manner in which they arose to the occasion.” said Mr. W. J. Stone, chairman of the St. John Free Ambulance Service, last night. “The appeal was launched at a bad time for the public because of the burden of Christmas expenditure and because of the other appeals which have been held and are to be made in the near future.” Mr. Stone expressed appreciation of the arrangements made for the appeal by the secretary of the service, Mr. D. E. Gullery, and thanked those who had assisted as collectors. It was hoped to have a detailed list for publication to-morrow. This year 50 per cent, of the collection received by brigade members will go to the St. John Ambulance Association for the work of the brigade. Donations, however, will go to the Free Ambulance Service.
