ILL-FATED PORT BOWEN WOOL

ABOARD THE DORIC STAR TALLOW AND FROZEN MEAT Wool from the holds of the stranded Port Bowen was on board the illfated Doric Star, which has been reported sunk by enemy action, presumably in the South Atlantic. The Doric Star also had on board 111 casks of tauov/ from the Pori Bowen. The tallow and 1917 bales of wool, which had been loaded on th« Port Bowen in Australia, were transhipped from Wanganui to Wellington by the coastal vessels Breeze and Kapuni and loaded on the Doric Star, which also loaded a cargo of frozen meat from New Plymouth before sailing for Australia. When the Doric Star finished loading in New Zealand on October 20 all the refrigerating space was occupied by dairy produce and meat. She also carried a quantity of wool. She had two passengers from New Zealand but they were transhipped to another vessel on reaching Australia and it is believed she had no passengers when she sailed for England. The master is Captain W. Stubbs, the chief engineer Mr. W. Ray. and chief steward Mr. W. Gandy. The names of other officers are not obtainable.
