POLICE FORCE CHANGES

i WANGANUI CITY AFFECTED TWO SENIOR OFFICERS The two .senior officers in the Wanganui police district. Superintendent J. Lander and Senior-Sergeant L. R. Capp, are affected by pending retirements and transfers in the force. Superintendent J. Lander, after 40 years’ service with the force, retires on superannuation on Friday and is to be farewelled to-night. Senior-Sergeant L. R. Capp, who has held that rank and been stationed in Wanganui since 1932, is to be transferred to Wellington with the rank of sub-inspector. Sub-Inspector J. A. Dempsey, of Wellington, is to succeed Superintendent Lander at Wanganui and will be promoted to the rank of i;>>ector. He is expected to take up his new duties before (he end of the week. Senior-Sergeant Capp's successor is to bo Sergeant F. Culloty, of Dargaville, who is promoted to the rank of senior-sergeant. It is a coincidence that. Superintendent Lander, who came to Wanganui in 1933 with the rank of inspector, was promoted to superintendent at the beginning of this year, I and, as the date of his retirement was comparatively close at hand, he was allowed to remain in charge at Wanganui instead of taking over a metropolitan district. Senior-Sergeant Capp, when he came to Wanganui, took over from Senior-Sergeant D. A. Mac Lean the chairmanship of the Police-Press Committee which was promoted to raise funds in the relief of distress. The efforts of that committee were successfully continued under Mr. Capp's chairmanship, until the depression period came to an end.* Inspector J. A. Dempsey is one of the best-known officers of the Police Force in Wellington, where he has been stationed for nearly* 10 years. He has had a meritorious career in the force, which he joined in 1906, being stationed in Dunedin, Wellington, Bay of Islands, Auckland, Gisborne, and Hastings before his return to Wellington. He was appointed sergeant in 1921, and senior-sergeant in 1928. As a senior-sergeant he was one of the police party which accompanied the Duke of Gloucester when he toured New Zealand in 1935, and for his services on the tour Dempsey received the Royal Victorian Medal. Other Transfers. Inspector J. Powell, New Plymouth, retires on superannuation on November 19, and will be succeeded by Inspector T. Shanahan, Timaru. SubInspector M. Flanigan. Auckland, has been promoted inspector, and will take Inspector Shanahan’s place in Timaru. Senior-Sergeant D. L. Calwell, Auckland, has been promoted subinspector. and will remain temporarily in Auckland. Senior-Sergeant E. T. C. Turner, New Plymouth, has been promoted to the rank of sub-inspector. He will be transferred temporarily to Wellington, replacing Sub-Inspector D. J. O’Neill, who will take charge of police duties at the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition. Sergeant J. F. Cleary. Ashburton, has been promoted to senior-sergeant, and will remain in charge of the Ashburton station. Sergeant E. Clark, Wairoa, has been promoted seniorsergeant and transferred to Auckland, where he will fill the vacancy caused by the promotion of Senior-Serget nt Calwell. Sergeant J. .1. Gallagher, head office. Wellington, is promoted to the rank of senior-sergeant, and Sergeant C. M. Anniss, Stratford, is also promoted senior-sergeant, and transferred to New Plymouth. Other transfers are: Sergeant L. T. Moore, Gisborne, to take charge of Wairoa station; Sergeant M. Brady, Napier, to take charge of Dargaville station; Sergeant W. N. Ferguson. Palmerston North, to take charge of Stratford station; Sergeant A. Doel, Auckland, transferred to Gisborne; Sergeant F. Forsyth, Dunedin, to Napier; Sergeant C. Murphy, Christchurch, to Palmerston North. The following have been appointed acting-sergeants: Constable M. Conway, Kaiapoi, and transferred to Dunedin; Constable H. Hedley, Whakatane, transferred to Auckland; Constable F. Taylor. Kaitaia, transferred to Auckland; Constable J. Jackson, Nelson, transferred to Wellington. Constable A. J. Austin, Nelson, transferred to Christchurch; Constable N. S. Milligan, Gisborne, transferred to Auckland; Constable G. E. Callaghan, Wellington, to remain in Wellington.
