INSULTING WORDS
USED IN CHURCH
YOVNG MAN F INED A fine of £3 and 3s cost was imposed on Frederick Jack Ede, aged 21 years, by Mr. A. Coleman, S.M.*, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of using insulting words in St. Mary’s Catholic Church within the hearing of others. The offence took place on October 23. Senior-Sergeant L. R. Capp, who appeared for the police, said Ede, in company with two other young men, attended a service in the church. They were talking and were spoken to by some members of the congregation. The three got up to leave the church and Ede used the words complained of. Ede stated that he later apologised to the church authorities. Mr. Coleman said the maximum penalty was £5 but he did not propose to inflict that amount.
