MAORI FOUND GUILTY
TAIHAPE CASE HEARD
In the Supreme Court at Wanganui yesterday a Macri, John Moetatua Raukawa, aged 22, was found guilty of attempted indecent assault on a half-caste girl, 18 years of age. He was remanded for sentence. Accused was charged on three separate counts, the first alleging that he attempted to commit rape, the second that he attempt to indecently' assault the complainant, and the third, which was alternative to the second, that he did assault her. His Honour, Sir. Justice Smith, presided. The Crown's ease was presented by Mr. N. R. Bain, Crown Prosecutor at Wanganui, and the accused was represented by Mr. J. Hussey. The jurymen were: Messrs. C. F. Newham (foreman), H. E. Tomsett, P. Carmichael, H. Bleasdale, W. H. Abraham. A. G. Hucklesby, A. Neilson, E. J. Hutchins, D. O’Leary, C. Owen, J. Caird and G. Richards. Evidence given related to incidents which occurred in what is known as the “Ziz-zag,” Taihape, on the night of September 23 last.
