WAVERLEY BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY
CONCLUSION OF PLANTING SEASON A meeting of the Waverley and District Beautifying Society was held recently with an attendance of nine members: In the absence of the president, Mr. O. J. Hawken. the chair was taken by Mr. E. C. Dallison. Details of the various planting efforts for the season were reported to the committee and various accounts were passed tor payment. Al the Waitotara Hill 150 trees and shrubs were planted, comprising 70 varieties. About half of these are natives, ot which there are about 20 varieties. The planting at the Waverley war memorial consisted of -14 polyanthus roses, 24 hydrangeas, three kowhais, two Norfolk pines and several miscellaneous trees and shrubs. Twelve kowhais were planted in the streets ol Waverley and two dozen roses at Ihe Waverley baths. The planting of 250 trees and shrubs during the first four months of the society's existence was felt to be quite an achievement. Offers by Mrs. A. E. Symes, of Waverley, and Mr. T. E. Wilson, of Waitotara, to donate 12 shrubs each to be selected by the society were reported. Arrangements were made for the planting of 40 russel lupins donated by Mr. Charlton. The question of starting a societynursery was considered and it was decided that in view of the probable shortage of labour because of the war effort it would be inadvisable to commence such a project. It was therefore decided to ask committee memI bers and members of the public to set aside a small portion of their own (gardens for the purpose of propagat- ■ ing shrubs, etc., either by means of I seeds, cuttings or any other method.
