WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

KAI BVI MEMBERS MEET Members and friends of the Kai Iwi I Women's Institute spent an enjoyable social afternoon on October 16, when they celebrated their fifth birthday. Benzine restrictions prevented a number of visitors from other institutes attending. The hall was prettily decorated w,th flowers for tne occasion and a long table down one side was daintily set with delicious tasties for the afternoon tea. A handsome birthday cake, beautifully iced in the instii tute colours, adorned the head of the I table. I Mrs. Burns presided and expressed a ' hearty welcome to all and referred to ,■ the pleasure ol having Mrs. Millen I present, as it was xvitn her guidance I and encouragement that the branch i was first formed. Floral sprays were presented to Mesdames Millen, Burns I and Darbyshire. Musical items given by Westmere members were very much appreciated, those contributing being Mesdames Corliss, Wilson, Cooper and Miss Missen. The competition arranged by Mrs. Bruntlett required a good deal of thought and Miss Williams was the winner. The show of handwork was greatly admired, the table being full of exhibits. Again the trading stall did good . business. Another stall of this kind

will bo held next meeting to help swell the institute funds. Results of the points competitions were: Hospital box, Mesdames Rountree 1, Morrison 2. Darbyshire 3; best bloom, Mesdames Staitc 1, Rountree 2, Huwyler 3. Miss McCullock and Mrs. McKenzie tied lor guessing the correct weight of the cake. It was regretted that Mrs. Darbyshire had to give up her capable position as secretary. Mrs. McKenzie has kindly consented to carry on Ihe duties, A small charge was made for afternoon tea and this resulted in a nice donatioii handed into the Red Cross. The hospital boxes were sent into the Public Hospital to help cheer (he sick. The birthday cake was made by Mrs. Morrison and iced by Mrs. Gilbody. The next meeting will be held on November 2. a week earlier on account of the Wanganui Show. Hostesses for November are Mesdames Toohey, Morrison. Goldsbury and Huwyler. Competition, three wholemeal scones, bowl of flowers, also best bloom.
