Automatic Fire Alarm. Tenders are being called by the Wanganui Hospital Board for the installation of an automatic fire alarm at the Jubilee Home. Port Bowen Enquiry. The nautical enquiry into the stranding of the Port Line steamer Port Bowen on Castlecliff Beach will open at Wellington next Thursday, November 2. Corps of Frontiersmen. Squadron headquarters of C Squadron of the British Corps of Frontiersmen will be opened in Wanganui tonight at the Gonville Domain. After the opening ceremony members of the squadron will attend a social function in McGruers Hall. Tour By Opposition Leader. To further the interests of the National Party, the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. A. Hamilton, intends to make an organisation tour early next month, in the course of which he will address meetings of members of the party and friends. Wanganui has not been included in the itinerary for the tour, which will be confined to the upper half of the North Island. Club Room for Members. A recommendation to the incoming executive that consideration should bt given to the question of providing a club room for members was agreed to at last night's annual meeting of the Automobile Association (Wanganui j. The president, Mr. A. S. Buigess, said that h number of associn tions already had club'rooms for the benefit of thotr members and the members of other associations. Two Minor Fires. Two calls to miflor outbreaks were answered by the Wanganui Fire Brigade yesterday. The first was received at 3.02 p.m. to a shop on the corner of Liverpool and Pitt Streets. Several weather boards were on fire, but the flames were suppressed in time to prevent any damage. The other call was received at 3.33 p.m. to a grass fire in Collins Street, which was also extinguished in the inci]/?nt stage. Trout Fishing. Anglers have enjoyed little success in the Wanganui district since the opening of the trout fishing season, because of the discoloured condition of the rivers, in the Rangitikei, however, fish is reported to be plentiful and those caught have been in good condition. Wanganui anglers who nave cottages in the vicinity of Tokaanu are looking forward to the opening of the fishing season in the Taupo district on November 1. Improved Roads. “Do not forget that it was the auto- i mobile associations that worked for j many years to get the Government to ' give you the good roads that you have : to-day. People are inclined to lose : sight of this fact,” said the president. Mr. A. S. Burgess, at last night's j annual meeting of the North Island, Motor Union. Members should not , forget that with the improved roads I they saved their membership fee over] and over again in reduced upkeep. To j the automobile associations credit was due for the improved roads. Marist Mission. The Marist Mission which has been in progress at St. Mary’s Catholic Church during the week will conclude to-morrow (Sunday) when there will be a general Communion of the whole parish. At night there will be solemn and imposing ceremonies including a special sermon, the renewal of baptismal vows, and the imparting of the Papal blessing. Solemn Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will conclude the service. During the week the mission has been largely attended both night and morning. The Mass for Peace which is said during the Forty Hours’ Devotions will be celebrated this morning. Slot Telephones. Three new penny-in-ihe-slol telephone booths have been provided in Wanganui recently by the Post and Telegraph Department. These were at Springvale, Durie Hill and the corner of Pitt and Glasgow Streets. There are now 25 slot telephones in Wanganui in addition to a pay station in a city retail emporium. Four slot machines will be provided in the new Chief Post Office building compared with the present two and an innovation will be the provision of a multicoin collecting machine from which the public will be able lo make 101 l calls after the office i.s closed. Dahlia Show. Advice has been received by the secretary of the Wanganui and Suburban Horticultural Society that the Dahlia Society of New Zealand has awarded the North Island show to Wanganui for the current season. The show will be held in the Drill Hall, in conjunction with the Wanganui and Suburban Horticultural Society’s dahlia show on February 29 and March 1, 1940. As this will be the first time that the Dahlia Society of New Zealand has held a show in Wanganui. strong committees have been formed in order to ensure the success of the project. National Military Reserve. A total of 2836 enrolments for the National Military Reserve have been ] received in the Wanganui Military Area out of a total of 35,784 for the whole of Now Zealand. Of the Wanganui enlistments, 399 were former territorials, 888 were returned soldiers and ex-regulars and 851 were placed in the third category. In addition 851 men in ineligible categories offered their services to the reserve. It is noticeable throughout, the enrolments that the largest figures are among returned soldiers and exregulars, the totals being: Class one 5169, class two 12,676 clai< three 10,312 and not eligible 7627. Control of Game and Fish. The future control of game and fish by acclimatisation societies was discussed at a conference in Wellington last week between delegates of North Island acclimatisation societies and the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. W. E. Parry. The Minister gave a clear indication that there would be a change regarding the present control, and said he had in mind the appointment of a commissioner who would have special control. Delegates from North and South Island societies will meet later to formulate a scheme which will be submitted to the Minister. A further conference will then be held with a view to coming to an arrangement satisfactory to all parties. The Wanganui Acclimatisation Society was represented at the confer’ence by Mr, J. Duigan.
