NOTE TO CLUB INSTEAD. SHOW ASSOCIATION’S 1100. HAMILTON’S Oct. 23. A proposal to vote £100 to patriotb funds was defeated at a meeting o the executive of the Waikato Winte Show Association to-day, and a; amendment that £100 be spent m pro viding comforts at the soldiers' club it the association’s buildings was ad opted. The original motion was pro posed by the president, Mr. F. Bui lock. Mr. R. English said he was preparer to contribute hisshare toward patriots funds, but he objected to the Govern ment handling the money. He consid cred men should he conscripted to; the war and others should be made tc pay their equal share toward the cost Mr. F. A. Snell said he understood the Government was going i.o organise the patriotic funds. In any case they would take the lot. A suggestion that Hamilton should be an independent centre tor tno administration ot patriotic funds w;;: made by Mr. J. R. Fow, who said that Auckland even objected to the opening of an imprest account in Hamilton. The tact that the Government was taking charge created a distil ruing which was not likely to help matters. He was dubious as to how the scheme would work out, but. he thought the association should give a lead by making a substantial donation such as the president, had suggested. Mr. W. Fraser said the regulations were destined to co-ordinate effort and to avoid overlapping and unauthorised collections. He questioned whether the adoption of tne amendment would be legal. Mr. Bisley, who moved the amendment. added a proviso that, the gift be subect to its being not in conflict with the regulations. The amendment was declared adopted by 10 votes to 3. * I AN A iV A T1J UK I FIGIS <VI. C UMBE RSO M E REG ULA TIO NS. PALMERSTON N., Oct. 26. Criticism of the elaborate machinery established for the handling of patriotic funds and the belief that the regulations would cripple any spontaneous giving by the people of the city and district were expressed by members of the zone D committee for the centennial celebrations. “It seems to me that we are going

s t - from one extreme to the other,” said ! Mr. A. E. Mansfora. “The heart ha.s - been taken out ot any local efforts. My opinion is that the whole thing is - too cumbersome. If someone wants to I send a safety-razor to someone in 1- camp they have to go- through all these committees.” Mr. A. E. Pyde (Shannon): It boils down to this -they won’t raise funds with any confidence. Mr. K. A. Henderson (Palmerston North): Are they asking us to deal with patriotic funds? Mr. Mansford: There is a provincial fund in Wellington, and all we raise here go there. If we w*.m funds for local effort wo have to ask ’ them if we can have thorn. There are t eight or nine provincial councils, and there is not one for any Palmerston ■ c North funds. If we want to make ‘ shirts we have to apply for permis--3 sion from Wellington.
