SIXTH BIRTHDAY PARTY The sixth birthday of the Marton ’ Junction W.I. was celebrated on Wed- ' nesday, July 7. Mrs. Slight, the 1 president, vvelcomed visitors from the ’ neighbouring institutes, also members ’ of the Marton branch of the W.D.F.U. and the Mothers’ Union. An interesting letter was received from Miss ’ Truman, who is attending the tri--1 ennial conference, in London. Mrs. W. G. Short, president of the ’ Oroua Federation, gave a short talk on institute matters, and the arrangements made for the institute’s display at the Palmerston North show. Marton Junction entered a “delicatessen shop” and were successful in gaining fust prize. Mrs. Barnicoat, secretary ol the Oroua Federation, was also present. The programme opened with the | singing of “Comrades and Friends,” after which the singing circle were heard in two numbers. A short sketch, “Visiting Conference," was presented by Mesdames Johnston, Tarry, and Franke. Mrs. McNab accompanied ■ Mrs. Eagle, whose vocal solos were very much appreciated. The drama circle entertained with a one-act play entitled “How We Alter,” those taking part being the Misses Moss, Watt, and Winchcombe. Two more glees were rendered by the singing circle, and the concluding item was the institute song “Smile, Smile, Smile.” A beautiful birthday cake, which was. made by Mrs. 11. Matthews and iced by Mrs. Jordan, was greatly admired. Mrs. Purnell lit the candles and Mrs. Short blew them out, these two ladies receiving shoulder .prays. During the cutting of the cake, which was done by the ex-presidents, Mesdames Gregory, Humphrey, and Hammond, hosts of good wishes were received, also greetings from the Dominion, Oroua and Wanganui Federations. Mrs. Barnicoat presented the prizes to the winners of the afternoon’s 'competitions, these being: Knitted 'scarf, Mrs. Tarry 1. Mrs. Evans 2. Mrs, Slight 3; crochet scarf, Mrs. Humphrey 1, Mrs. Gregory 2. The hostesses for next month are Mesdames Meyer <chief). McQueen. Montgomery. Moore, Adams. Barton. F. Poppe, and N. Poppe. The competitions are Italian quilting and pikelets.
