“CHILDISH IDEA"
FATALITY FLAGS POOR RECEPTION FROM WANGANUI A.A. Bearing a black cross when there had been a motor accident in the district, safety flags were suggested for the Automobile Association in a letter from the North Island Motor Union received by the Automobile Association (Wanganui) at its monthly meeting last night. Previously R had been suggested that the flags should be lowered to half-mast when there was a fatality in the district, but it was later decided that a black cross affixed to the flag would be more effective. . The suggested flags and the number of times that black crosses were affixed to them would be for competition, the letter continued. Districts where the flags were to be used could be defined on a population basis, and that would make the competition equal. "It is a childish idea,” commented Mr. J. Aylmer. "I do not think it would make anyone more careful." Mr. P. D. England said that intciest in the flags had waned in Christchurch and other centres. “I think it is a farce, myself," commented the chairman, Mr. A. S. Buigess. On the motion of Mr. W. G. Sampson, the executive decided to take no action.
