MANAWATU RACES AWAPUNI AUTUMN CARD GOOD FIELDS FOR FRIDAY Immediately following Wellington, the Manawtu Racing Club’s autumn meeting, which will be held this year on Friday and Saturday next, is one of the important draw cards oi the autumn campaign, and, with the excellent fields tnat are promised, including a number of Soutn island visitors, tne fixture should be one of the most successful conducted by the club in recent years. The schedule of events provides for all classes oi horses, anti there is a most attractive programme for each day. Besides the handicap events, there are the w.f.a. Awapuni Golo Cup on the first day and lhe Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes on tne second day, as well as a hurdles each day. The Sires’ Produce Stakes is the second event of the season in which the two-year-olds are able to run over seven furlongs, and among its winners in the last decade have been such horses as Gay Ballerina, Gesture, High Comedy, Golden Hair, Burnish, smoke Screen, and Defaulter. The course at Awapuni is among the best racing grounds in the Dominion, and the track is in splendid order at present.’ The going on Friday and Saturday, unless mere should be rain during the next day or two, which is unlikely by present forecasts, will be firm and faster than at Trentham last week. The times at Awapuni in the autumn are often very fast. This meeting customarily attracts good Wanganui patronage, and the 1939 fixture should be no exception. WAITOITOI BEACH CLUB SATURDAY’S RESULTS The increasing popularity of the Waitoitoi Beach picnic race meeting was demonstrated on Saturday by a gathering representative of the whole district, including several parties from Waitara, New Plymouth and Central and South Taranaki. The Waitoitoi Cup was won by the locally-owned Racecamp from a field of four, with Civic Reception and Erin Lad, winner of the Moerangi Maiden Handicap, filling the minor places. The rider of the winner, P. J. Farrell, also received a trophy. The principal sprint race, the Barnitt Handicap, was won by the New Plymouth-trained Gold Petal, who had previously won the Farmers’ Plate. The Cup winner, Racecamp, was runner-up. The final race, the White Cliffs Handicap, of five furlongs, was won by the New Plymouth-trained Young Charles, who had run second in the Farmers’ Plate. Bimbo and Civic Reception filled the minor places, the last named running a second and two thirds in his three starts. Miss Connie Ryan won the Lady Hunters’ Race.
