BEAUTIFYING RANGITIKEI ROADSIDE

TREE PLANTING SUGGESTED. (Own Correspondent') MARTON, March 3. A deputation comprising Messrs. H. Y. Lethbridge, E. Oliver, A. P. Howard and G. M. Lethbridge waited upon lhe Rangitikei County Council, on Friday, from lhe Rangitikei Tree Planting and Reservation Society in connection with beautifying county roads. Mr. H. Y. Lethbridge inquired as lo what extent the council would be prepared to assist lhe society on tree planting and fencing. They had already received a supply of trees for beautifying the roadsides a.nd scenic cornets. The chairman asked the deputation to go into the question of how much money was required and the council could consider it when the estimates were framed. Cr. G. L. Marshall staled that the society contemplated beautifying of the roads and cliffs on the MarlonTurakina Road. What the society wanted lo know was whether the council was prepared to subsidise the work. The chairman stated that they had to consider the whole of the county. He thought the council favoured the idea, but would like to know what definite amount was required, and a plan ot the proposed work, when they would be able to give it consideration. Cr. V. Smith stated that a good deal of work had been carried out in the Taihape district with poplars, which made an effective display with the native bush as a background. A good deal of beautifying could be accomplished by setllet's if they could be induced to beautify the roadsides bordering their own properties. He was quite prepared to help in supplying poplar cuttings, etc. Mr. S. A. R. Mair, who is president of lhe Rangitikei Society, stated that if the Taihape people would form a society and work in with their society they could carry out a good deal of beautifying in the county. There was no limit IO the number of trees that could be obtained. It was the intention of the Rangitikei Society to beautify wherever it was possible. They had numerous offers of gifts of trees and Mr. Davies, of New Plymouth, had already donated a gift of 100 trees with more to follbw. If the council would grant a certain amount of fencing it would be a step towards attaining their object. After the deputation withdrew the council decided that it was in sympathy with the proposed beautifying scheme and would materially assist with the fencing.
