The ravages of the purge was apparent at the opening ot the Supreme Council of the Soviet. Nine oi the twenty-live I copies' Commissars chosen in January, 1938, have disappeared. Those missing are the ViceBremiers Chubar and Kossior, both members ot Stalin’s Political Bureau, the Navy Commissar (Peter Smirnof), the Internal Trade Commissar (Mikhael Smirnof), Agriculture Commissar (Eikhe Machine), Construction Commissar (M. Bruskin), Public Health Commissar <M. Boldareff), Food and Industry Commissar (M. Ghelensky). and Agricultural Stocks Commissar (M. Popoff).
