USE OF RUBBER BANDS
REPLACEMENT OF STRING HORROR TO SOME SCHOOLS Rubber bands are being extensively used in Wanganui in place of string, proving both convenient and effective for smaller types of parcels,, newspapers and other similar packages. Some schools, however, have entered the “rubber band" era in a sort of nightmare. To the mind of a boy a rubber band has no better use than to be drawn back and let go at some unsuspecting target, usually the back of a master's head, or perhaps the ear of a prefect looking the other way. In one Wanganui school, at least, the possession of an innocent looking rubber band is as serious a matter as being found with a shanghai in the days of old. It means the cane!
