Youth Injures Knee. With a gash in a knee a youth. Robert Spenee, a farm labourer residing at Stewart Street, Aramoho. was admitted to the Wanganui Public Hospital on Saturday. It was necessary to stitch the wound, but it is not of a serious nature. Meeting of Candidates. Friends and supporters of the Labour candidates for the forthcoming municipal elections are to meet on Thursday next. Labour candidates are to sit for the Mayoralty, City Council, Harbour Board, Hospital Board, and Power Board. Girl Injured. A child named Merle Atkinson, aged seven years, was admitted to the I Wanganui Public Hospital yesterday | with a cut on the head. Her home is at 23 Anzac Parade. The child was climbing a tree when she fell to the ground. Her condition is not I regarded as serious. Malicious False Alarm. The Wanganui Fire Brigade turned ' out to a malicious false alarm at the ( corner of Gonville Avenue and Heu/. Road shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday. The golf season was opened in earnest in Wanganui on Saturday, when a large number of players participated in their initial games of the 1938 season. The Wanganui and Seafield Clubs held their official opening ceremonies on Saturday, but Castlecliff Club held their opening a week earlier. The Wanganui Ladies Golf Club will commence the new season’s activities on Wednesday.

Wanganui Athletes’ Successes. Wanganui athletes enjoyed success at both meetings which they attended on Saturday. At the Taihape sports P. Wallace won the 100 yards and the 120 yards, and was second in the 75 yards. Besides these three trophies he annexed the points prize. L. Burgess was first in the 220 yards. At a meeting at Feilding C. V. Evans annexed first trophy in the mile, and L, Stephenson was second in the 100 yards and quarter-mile.

Air Pilots’ Rally. New Plymouth and Wanganui pilots during the week-end joined in their annual rally at the Wanganui Airport. Various competitions resulted as follow:—Bombing: J. Franklin, junr., 1, E. J. Strachan 2. Landing: C. Plumtree 1. Forced landing: J. Franklin 1, J. R. Franklin 2. The Burgess Cup, for the Wanganui pilot displaying the best ability in handling his machine, was won by J. Franklin, junr. Pilots and friends were entertained at a dance at the clubhouse on Saturday evening.

Swimming Club Picnic. A most enjoyable picnic was held by the Wanganui East Swimming Club at the Birch Park Pool at Maxwell on Saturday. After the picnic and games in the morning members of the Wanganui East. Club, together with other Wanganui swimmers, participated in an impromptu programme of events in the Maxwell pool. Spectators were treated to a display of five live-saving methods by Wanganui swimmers, and I. Mitchell and Lovett, of the Gonville Club, gave a demonstration of correct breaststroke swimming over four lengths of the pool. It is estimated that the Maxwell pool fund will benefit by approximately £5 as a result of Saturday’s displays.

Wangaehu Pig Club. "I am well pleased with the weights recorded by the Wangaehu Pig Club,” said Mr. C. H. M, Sorrenson, who is in Wanganui in connection with the Taranaki District Pig Council. The Wangaehu Club is under the management of Mr. R. Charteris. A Tamworth sow', Scholastic Beauty, was accredited with a litter weight of 14.221 b. per pig at three weeks and 561 b. at eight weeks at a cost of 4s per weaner. Mr. Sorrenson stated that a little sister, Scholastic Bessie, promises to be even better with a three weeks’ litter of 17.221 b. per pig. Pig farming is becoming recognised as a valuable sideline, and interested farmers are invited to inspect these sows. Half Mile of Hose. To combat a fire on St. John’s Hill on Saturday the Wanganui Fire Brigade used a lead of hose over a half a-mile in length. Near 1.30 p.m. the brigade received an alarm and on arrival found the St. John’s Hill School threatened in one section by an extensive fire in gerse and lupins. For several hours the brigade was hard pressed, but despite their efforts a plantation of pines was partially destroyed. It was necessary to run a lead to the Virginia Lake to secure water, 2400 feet of hose being used. This is the greatest length that has been used at one fire for some years by the local brigade. Suppressing the fire, which was over an extensive area, occupied the firemen for a considerable period, it being after six p.m. when they returned to the station. Rail Car Service. Rati cars to run on the WellingtonPalmerston North - Wanganui - New Plymouth night service are under construction at the Hutt Railway Workshops. Because of difficulty in obtaining materials, particularly steel, the construction of rail cars is more than a year behind schedule.
