As a result of a wild skirmish on board the steamer Hertford, when two deckhands fell about 35ft. into the harbour, one of the seamen, Frederick Gosling, aged 17, suffered concussion and was admitted to hospital. It was while a friend of the injured man, John Maiien, was attempting to prevent him from diving into the harbour for a swim that the two overbalanced and fell into the water.
