WAVERLEY CUP

LABOUR DAY EVENT TARANAKI’S HOLIDAY CARD For racegoers throughout Taranaki and Wanganui districts the Labour Day meeting of the Waverley Racing Club invariably proves one of the premier attractions of the year, and the prospects for the fixture on Monday appear very bright. Fine weather would be appreciated by the committee, to provide for picnic conditions, but a few showers of rain during the week-end would be beneficial to the tracks following the ■spell of dry weather. The totalisator will be operated on the single-pool system, with dividends on first and second horses where the number of starters is more than four. The dividend indicator will also be used, and there will be a local broadcast of the running of races. Patrons who make the journey by rail will appreciate the fact that a special train will leave Wanganui at 9 a.m. on Monday, arriving at the course at 10.47 a.m. The return train will leave the course at 5.30 p.m. and is due at Wanganui at 7.15 p.m. Special excursion fares will rule. Those who travel to Waverley by motor-car will find that complete arrangements have been made for carparking at the course, the patrols of the Automobile Association (Wanganui) having provided a lay-out which should prove acceptable to all patrons. ■ A double-entrance will ensure ease of access to the parking area, and patrons will assist the attendants if they have the entrance fee ready and also obey the signals which, will facilitate rapid parking. Cup Candidates The Waverley Cup is an old-estab-lished event, as may be gathered from the list of previous winners in the ollicial card, which provides evidence tha the race has been run each year since 1879. Thus the year after next will be that in which the diamond jubilee Cup event will be staged. In the long list of winners there are many names of horses which went on to even greater honours. St. Clair, Laurel, Irish Twist, Battleaxe, Uhlando, Labour Day (appropriate enough), Oratress, Depredation, Marqueteur, Muraahi, Nukumai, The Banker, Gibraltar and Fersen (last year’s N.2. Cup winner) are some of those which will be noted.

The field for Monday, though not a large one, nevertheless contains the names of Friesland and Gold Mission, both useful horses that should be well supported. Friesland’s form last season was outstanding, and he has had a couple of races recently so he should be in good order for Monday’s event. The stable apprentice, L. Monkley, will be in the saddle, and thus he will be required to carryonly 8.9, which is 21b more than the impost against Gold Mission’s name. Last year Fersen won the Waverley Cup and went on to win the New Zealand Cup, as The Banker had done ten years before. Friesland will bo attempting to repeat the feat on Monday. Gold Mission, placed in thirteen of her last fifteen starts, has been one of the most consistent gallopers raced during the past few months. At her last start she was third at Otaki with 8.10, behind Might 7.4 and Sunee 8.3, both of whom won convincingly at Masterton, and prior to that sne was beaten by a neck by Reipar at Marton. She now meets Reipar on 131 b better terms. Gold Mission can be relied on to run her usual honest race.

Reipar won at Marton last month when the track was much softer than it will be on Monday, and that is one reason why rain would be appreciated. He has gone along the right way in the intervening period but the sting will have to be out of the ground if he is to have a good chance. The other three engaged are hacks, Master Limond and Green Timber still being maiden performers, while Race Boy has won at the only starts he has had in public. Race Boy, it may be noted, is also engaged in the Brewer Handicap, the open sprint, but it would not be the first time that the double has been attempted. Lady Kyra and Airing should be well-backed candidates, especially as it is reported that Notium is under a cloud.

Riding Engagements Riding engagements announced for Waverley include:— R. W. Savage: Even Money, Ohanga, Hunting Spy. G. P. Dowrick: Mustang, Gay Marion- * ette, Cloak. R. Sargent: Cloudy Bay, Cute Melody. S. Hawkes: Seaham, Student Prince. L. Clifford: Fafner. C. Cole: Narrator, Arahura. S. Edwards: Ned Cuttie, Reipar. P. Button: Swift and Sure, St. Cedric, Vienna. L. No riders have been engaged for Vadanoe and Master Limond.

ON HAWERA TRACKS

CANDIDATES FOR WAVERLEY SEMI-FINAL GALLOPS The semi-final gallops for Waverley on Monday were a feature of the 'morning's work on the Hawera tracks and some good times were recorded, writes “Goldspur” in the Hawera Star. Conditions were ideal for fast work and the plough was in excellent order. Student Prince (Hawkes), picked up by Narrator (Cole) over the last half-mile, worked attractively to register 1.17 4-5 for six furlongs, the last half-mile in 51 4-ssec. The former should be capable of a bold showing in the middle distance, hack event and will carry a 71b allowance. Narrator went better than his previous efforts of the past week.

Master Limond (Hawkes)’ assisted over the first couple of furlongs by Golden Orchid (Fryer), and brought home from the half-mile peg by the Standstar novice (Pepperell) in R. Brough’s stable, ran a mile in 1.47, the last four in 52sec. Master Limond was running on well at the finish and his owner-trainer holds hopes that he may be capable of upsetting the favourites in the Cup of a strong lightweight rider can be secured. The Sandstar mare is a promising novice, but claims no immediate engagements. Golden Orchid is coming to hand nicely. Le Marquis ((jrylls) and Gold Glare (Cole) were on terms at the close of half a mile in 51 3-ssec. Neither was extended.

For similar efforts Fafner (Hawkes) registered 514 sec. and Vienna (Button) 51 3-ssec. respectively. Fafner is improving and is not without fair prospects in the Maiden Stakes.

Advance Plane (Pepperell) sprinted two furlongs down the back in 26sec. He hit out boldly.

Friesland (Monkley) conceded Naughty Marietta (Grylls) a couple of lengths’ start over six furlongs, but was under a strong pull at the finish to stay alongside his companion in 1.194. Friesland has never looked better than at present, and is certain to touch a short price on Monday. Le Grand (Houton) and Vadanoe (Cochrane) were sent to the barrier and hopped away very smartly on two occasions. Both horses appear in good order. Notium has been causing his trainer anxiety and is a doubtful starter at Waverley.

NEW PLYMOUTH TRACKS

WAVERLEY CANDIDATES THURSDAY’S GALLOPS Most of the New Plymouth, horses booked lor Waverley were given their semi-final gallops on Thursday morning. There was very little doing, with one exception the work being on the plough, writes "Childers” in the Taranaki Herald. On the course proper Bantry and Shangri-la finished together at the close of half a mile in 53sec. Shan-gri-la hit out boldly and is in excellent shape for Monday. Sleepy covered seven furlongs in 1.334, bowling along well in his task. . Script occupied 1.19 1-5 for six furlongs. Winsome Lu set out from the six furlong peg, being picked up at five furlongs by Race Call, the pair coming home together in 1.4 with Winsome Lu taking 1.174 for the full journey.

Dancing Lady again pleased by leaving live furlongs behind in 1.3 2-5. This mare is much more solid now than formerly.

Lady Kyra gave Boony Glow a couple of lengths’ start over five furlongs but had to be held back to her companion over the concluding stages in 1.5 3-5. Lady Kyra had a good deal in reserve and could have improved considerably on this time. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB N.Z.
